California Claro Walnut (Juglans hindsii) is native to Northern California. First identified as a separate species by British botanist Richard Hinds in 1837, the tree was found primarily in the Central Valley and Contra Costa and Napa counties. Growing more than 60 feet high, Claro Walnut produces a smaller nut than English Walnut, the most common commercial variety. Well adapted to California soils, Claro rootstocks were commonly grafted onto English Walnut trunks in walnut orchards.
